The Obi100 paired with RingTo service is the most reasonably priced VOIP landline replacement of which I am currently aware (with the possible exception of KoT VOIP, which may be $2 cheaper a year, but looks much more complicated to install). The RingTo service costs only $12 a year for the required E911 with Anveo. Voice quality seems good so far (better than MagicJack or Nettalk Duo, and cheaper too). I plan to update this review later if any major problems come to light.
Installation was easy. When my new Obi arrived, I went to the Ring.to website, clicked on the "Support" tab, scrolled down to "Obihai Integration FAQs" and clicked on it, and then clicked on the topic "How do I add an Obihai device to my OBiTALK dashboard?". After I had the Obi added to my dashboard, I returned to the "Obihai Integration FAQs" and cliked on the topic "How do I setup an Obihai device with RingTo". The step by step directions were easy to follow, and I am pleased with my service so far.
One thing you will need for service with RingTo is a phone number to port in. It can be a Google Voice number (you will need to unlock it and pay $3 to port it out), a landline number, a cell phone number, etc. I have ported out one of each to RingTo with no problems. RingTo has helpful directions on their support page for each of these.
I used my Obi100 for a couple of years with Google Voice as my service provider, and liked it very much (see original review below). Last time I checked my old Obi is till working with Google Voice, but it may stop working any day now, so I had to find another alternative.
ORIGINAL REVIEW
Works great with Google Voice. It is easy to set up and use, and full of helpful features. (Tip: you can avoid some complications with set up by having your Google Voice account linked to a Gmail account that ends in gmail.com rather than some other extension. It is not impossible when linked to accounts using other extensions, but it can get complicated). I have really been enjoying saving more than $30 each month on my phone bill.
Voice quality is very good. Regarding fax, the connection through Google Voice is adequate for an occasional short fax, but fax over voip is not reliable enough for it to replace a dedicated fax line. On longer interstate faxes my success rate with the Obi 100 has been about 50%. That is better than the "fax friendly" Nettalk Duo I tried, but still not sufficient for frequent use.
This product has already paid for itself in the month and a half I have been using it. I like it so much I bought another Obi 100 and three Obi 110's to replace phone lines at my office.
Some people have expressed concern about giving your Google Voice user name and password to the Obihai website. Obihai says they only use this information to configure your device and don't retain it. For those of us who are too parnoid to just accept this (I don't use Google Calendar for security reasons), there are other alternatives:
1. You can set up a new Google Voice account that you use solely with your Obi.
2. If you have an existing Google Voice number that you want to keep because all of your friends know it, you also have a number of alternatives:
a. You can use the configuration tool that resides in the Obi device itself. You can get to that tool by pointing your browser to the device's local IP address, which you can get by dialing "***1″ on the telephone attached to the OBi. For more details on what to do, see point 7B at the tutorial at Voxilla.com.
b. You can transfer your Google Voice number to a new Google Voice account that you use solely with your Obi. Information about this is available from Google (search under "transfer my Google Voice number"). Then your existing gmail account and the information associated with it will be secure while you use your number with your new account through the Obi.
c. You can set up a new Google Voice account for your outgoing calls as service provider 1 on your Obi. As service provider 2 you can set up a free SIP account with Callcentric for incoming calls, link a free direct inward dialing number from IPKall to that account, and forward the calls from your old Google Voice account to the IPKall number. There is a slight loss of call quality by forwarding the call through a second carrier, but it is not bad.
d. You can set up a new Google Voice account on your Obi, set up a free Voxox account, and forward calls from your old Google Voice account to your Voxox account and then forward from your Voxox account to your new Google Voice account. This actually works, but there is a significant loss of call quality by forwarding twice. I would recommend one of the other solutions, and would not even mention this one except it was kind of fun to try, and I now have a Voxox account which gives me free unlimited incoming faxes, and outgoing faxes at a penny a minute. That solves the fax limitation with the Obi that I mentioned above.
#1. The Obi, at least the Obi 100 is inexpensive. Like I said, very rare use, so no need to spend a bucket of cash on it. I mostly use smart phones.
#2. Small (tiny) size. This thing is smaller than my smart phone, by a large margin.
#4. Works with Google Voice, and inexpensive E911 service.
Installation via the included setup card is a bit confusing, the most important things it tells you is how to connect the hardware, and to go to the Obihai website. Once on their site, I followed the video tutorials on setting up my device, and accounts.
After viewing and understanding the videos. It took all of 15 minutes to set up my Obi, to my All in one machine, then my phone, then connect to my Google Talk account, and finally to configure the E911 service through Anveo. Mind you, even though Ooma advertises their device gives you totally free telephone service, you still have to pay the 911 access fee (in the US anyway). That fee through Anveo is only $.80 versus $6.00 per month on services like Ooma...
My first call was to my Dad across the country as he is the only person to not like the sound of my Cell phone. he reports the call sounded like it came from a regular land line. Several other calls to other folks and they all report good call quality. My perception of the connections was with the exception of my Dad (who likes to use junky old wireless phones) all of the calls were as good as, or better than a regular POTS land line.
Testing faxing by sending faxes to our FSA company (which we had been using online fax services for) and receiving by sending to us from those fax services needed some adjustments in the settings of Google voice, but once set up fax send / receive was flawless.
I can not speak to the long term function of this device, however the build quality is every bit as good as every other device in my network.
My only complaint, and it is VERY minor, is in the year 2013, when the overwhelming majority of networking hardware, computers, etc... are shipped in dark gray, or black housings, this thing does cosmetically stand out. However I have it simply installed on a rack shelf with my other network gear (structured wiring using a relay rack in my home office). They could use to change the color of the plastic on the top piece to a darker gray than the base part. The contrast is nice, just went the wrong way is all. No biggie...
For reference I tested and am currently using my Obi with an HP Photosmart 7520e all in one machine, and an AT&T 210 "Trimline" standard analog telephone.
***EDIT***
After 3 weeks of use I am finding I am using this much more often than I anticipated. Calls are clear and so far very reliable, not a single dropped call...
I did notice a no service available error message when I came home and tried to use the phone. Came to find out that the cable had gone out during the day, and once the line was fixed, my Obi hadn't re-established itself. I tried resetting the modem, and router with no luck. Finally powered off / on the Obi and all was well once it came back online... I guess it doesn't automatically reattempt connection once it is somewhat persistently lost. However once power cycled like I said, all was well again...
I do not have this connected to my house phone wiring as that is in pretty poor shape, and I am re-cabling the house. However it will be connected to a telephone distribution hub, with drops in each major room, kitchen, each bedroom, and the garage. Call quality is spot on.
***UPDATE 3/19/2014***
For those that don't know on May 15 2014 Google is cutting out the XMPP support from Google Voice. This is a HUGE problem for the Obi and similar devices in that Google Voice simply will not work with them any more. This was theoretically to improve Google Voice / Hangouts, but like I said, kills access to the Analog bridges like the Obi. Thankfully there are other SIP / XMPP Providers out there. I was using Anveo for my e911 service, and have bumped that up to the Office Unlimited plan as I do intend to use this for incoming calls and faxes for both home and small business use. The cost went up, but is manageable. It is now higher than Magic Jack by a dollar a month, but it is also includes 911 service which Magic Jack does NOT.
In the time I have owned my Obi I have had one issue with the service just refusing to work after an internet outage (Comcast broadband cable went down, HARD during a phone call). I managed to bring it back online easily by simply power cycling the device.
Call / voice quality is every bit as good, or better than my mobile phone, fax is flawless, cost is low / dirt cheap at least using Anveo, including international calls. What I spend for Anveo + international calls is less than what I was paying for Anveo + Google Voice + International calls... So win / win here!
While not as much of a smoking deal as it was when I bought it due to the free service, when combined with the low international rates, this is still probably the best deal on VoIP out there!
***EDIT 7/16/2015****
Been using this far more than anticipated. Google backed out of dropping XMPP support and Google voice, but I had already bought into a dirt cheap VoIP service for something like $30.00 a year that gives me 911 service. So I did what any sensible person would do.... Bought a second one, hooked Google Voice back up, and use it for faxes. I love it when I have to deal with insurance companies and junk that want faxes sent while they have me on the phone!
I would love it even more if I could get Google Voice to support both lines on my one account, AND give me 911 service, but hey, I am NOT complaining... I would pay Google the same as I pay PhonePower as Google Voice call quality is MUCH better than PhonePower...
