Looking for a Samsung Alternative? Try This!
I have had this rive for a couple of weeks now, and it has met my expectations. This is my 2nd real SSD (I have an old ReadyCahce drive, but yeah...). I am coming to this drive from an 840 EVO. I looked at the 850 EVO for a long time, but wanted a change of a pace. I love my Sandisk thumb drives, and they make their own NAND chips, plus this drive is some of the newer tech (in terms of release date). In just about every single situation there is no discernible difference between the X400 (256GB) and the 840 EVO (120GB) it replaced. It does boot faster (According to the Task Manager in Windows 10 the X400 boots in 18.1sec and the 840 EVO did it in 24.2sec). The X400 has a big cache too. In the 256GB version it can run 10GB "in SLC". For comparison the 850 EVO (250GB) has a 6GB "SLC cache. It does help with big file or data moves. The Dashboard suite is OK. Not as nice as the Samsung version. Sandisk doesn't have their own cloning software, but the one they link you to from the Dashboard works very well and it's free. My 840 was cloned to the X400 in a snap, and the Apricorn program is easy to use. I have attached a screen shot of some benchmarks. The "C" drive is the X400 and the "M" is a 2 HDD RAID 0 array, and the "F" drive is a RAID 1 array. I'll be keeping this drive in one form or another until it dies. My 840 will go into a laptop or become a game drive. I'm one of those people that doesn't fully trust SSD's, which is why I don't be crucial date on an SSD. I still trust my RAID 1 HDD array for that, for now. Maybe this drive will sway me one day when the prices come down more. PC's are a hobby for me, and while I love speed I don't see much point in going faster than this drive can deliver right now. If you're looking to get your feet wet in the SSD market I think this is a solid choice. Sandisk solid company, who made their fame in the flash storage market. Grab one of the smaller drives put your OS on it, and put your crucial data on something you trust. You'll get most of the speed benefits you want to see with the just an OS on the SSD.
