5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent, budget friendly dual band wireless router
Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2015
I had reservations about buying this. So now that I've had this router running for a month, I feel like it's time for a review to help put others at ease. It hasn't required any resets, dropped a signal or given any problems for over a month.

I bought it as an upgrade from my aging but still dependable Asus RT-10 (now used as a repeater in my garage behind the house). I needed the dual band WiFi since I have so many Rokus and I wanted to make sure they get the bandwidth they need.

It did take me 30+ minutes to get it setup how I like it but I haven't had to touch it since then. If you just did the basics then it would be less than 10 minutes. There are videos on YouTube that can walk you through the setup if you need it. The NAS serves as a media player for my network and was easy to setup. Having my Rokus on the 5GHz band helped spread out my bandwidth and improved WiFi performance on all my devices. I haven't had to reset it even once but if you do need to reset it then all you have to do is push the power button, reached easily on the back, off then on.

In short, this is the best dual band wireless router you can get for the money. No drops, no resets, just dependability. I also personally like the looks of this router. For home use, you don't need anything faster.

Pros:
AC speed
Gigabit AC router for cheap

Cons:
Randomly freezes up
Odd shape
Speed issues
Setup not quite as good as other routers
Lack of activity indicators

AC speed:
I must say the wireless speed was a nice boost over my old router, but that was is expected when moving to AC. It's just a given.

The price:
The price was the best thing about this router. If you can get a stable version it may an alright router for the price; however I wasn't that fortunate.

Freezing issue:
Mine froze twice in the first 8 days and simply unplugging it and plugging it back in didn't always work. There is one firmware update newer than what ships with the router, but it doesn't address the freezing issue. Because of the mix of users that have experienced this issue, I'm thinking it could be related to the carrier's IP delivery. In my case cable. I bet if you have a static IP, you might be alright with this router, but that's just a hunch.

The shape:
Maybe just a personal thing, but it doesn't fit in with any other hardware I have in the house. Very wide and you can't see the indicator lights unless you look at the top. Since I don't have mine sitting on the floor the indicators are not even visible. Additionally with all the cables plugged in it's back heavy and the front lifts off the desk. Odd because this thing is huge.

Speed issues:
This one is surprising. It's a gigabit router after all. I didn't notice until I plugged in my cheap Rosewill 300M router (100 MBt). It seemed odd that pages were loading faster, so I played a little. I did a speed test with the Rosewill, then with this router, then a control without any router. The results were surprising. Not going to harp on that though because there may have been some feature that this router had that the Rosewill didn't and that caused the slowdown.

The setup:
Many other reviews already hit on this so I'm not going to go into the issues. I'll just say the setup didn't go as smooth as it should have. Even knowing exactly how I needed to configure the router I still had to re-configure and re-configure before I had it working.

Lack of activity indicators:
This is a trend I hope dies soon. Microsoft started this by removing the network activity indicators that were in Win XP. Well TP-Link did the same thing here. The lights you see just show there is a computer connected and is plugged in. Doesn't even have to be turned on and the indicator light will turn on. So what good is this? The best way to determine your computer is doing something it shouldn't is to see activity on that port of a switch or router. Come on TP-Link, if a $25 router can do this why can't yours? That definitely isn't asking too much.

Summary:
This may be my only 1 star review. I never return items. I tend to suffer through the problems, and would have been willing to do that with this router, but there were just too many issues. It only took 2 weeks and I contacted Amazon for a return. Glad I did. I plugged in a $25 Rosewill I bought for my parents and had it up and running in maybe 2 minutes and had a speed increase to boot.

It is what it says it is.

I have a desktop and a laptop. I have been using the wireless router from the cable company that is in a different room from my desk. (It also services the entertainment center so I don't want to move it.) My desktop computer needed to be hard-wired for the ethernet so I added this router downstream of the cable company's router so I could plug in. What's nice is that my laptop downloads at about 27 Mbps on wireless and about 57 Mbps plugged in, which is the same speed as the desktop! So, I not only got to hook up my desktop computer but I also have a faster option for my laptop if/when I'm updating things.

The upload speeds are identical whether wired or wireless, at about 5.75 Mbps for my residential service.

Since I didn't buy it to add to or replace the wireless function of the cable company's router I have not installed or tested the wireless function of this router. I would hazard a guess that it will work just fine, though, since all I had to do to use it on either computer was plug it in and start using it. No set-up, no fuss, no muss.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Budget AC Router with options
Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2015

This wireless AC router arrived on time, which is what makes Amazon amazing. The router itself is large, and is a bit of an eyesore. It has a very odd and odd color pattern. That being said, the router itself is decent at best. I was able to plug up and begin the setup process right out of the box. The initial setup did not require the CD that came with it. It did come with leaflet that had manual setup instructions and those worked fine. This is my first time with a TP-Link product so router configurations will take some time to get used. However, it seems like there is a good amount of security, and priority networking options available for those willing to tackle the task. I don't yet have a wireless ac device, and the only dual band devices I have are computers, so the only thing I can say about the dual bands is that it works best if you set both on specific channels. The signal strength seems to be good, I have a 3 bedroom apartment so nothing too large but I have yet to drop connectivity after setting up the individual channels. So far so good all around. Right now my Chromebook is connected to the 5Ghz network with no problems. When I start streaming on the 5ghz ac band I will update again on performance, If you are thinking of upgrading your router and have the money to do so (home network), I would recommend purchasing a router that has a minimum of 450mbps on the 2.4ghz channel because most of your devices (if they are older) will be on this band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best wireless router so far, but it still drops connections
Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2014
Verified Purchase
Finally, a router worth what it costs! We have suffered through a number of worthless wireless routers over the years. First of all, they ALWAYS drop connections and have to be reset. I've read that this is due to the congested and unregulated 2.4GHz airwaves. A couple weeks in, this one seems to be the best.

First off, I had never carefully researched all the a/b/g/n/ac and the 2.4GHz vs. 5GHz stuff. This router seems to be able to accommodate all of these standards--with separate channels for each of these bands! Better still, it can handle today's data rates. My last router was only a year or two old, but it could only handle 150mb/s. Plenty of the lower end routers on Amazon are still in this neighborhood. In contrast, this router can handle 750mb/s--or 5x the data! Apparently this makes a big difference, because I tried streaming a movie over the 150mb/s and it was horrible--yet it's perfect over 750.

Second, it performs so much better than the $220 modem/wifi combo that I tried just prior to this. The combo device was like going back to dial-up, and it dropped connections every few minutes. At the promotional price of $40, this router seems to be a better value than most dual-band wireless ac routers.

Now for the down side. First, it has a USB port with print or data server capacities. I tried each of these and I really wasn't impressed. The interface is uber simple and somewhat functional. To run the USB-print-server function, for example, you have to install a server driver. I did so on every machine in my house, but the server driver would freeze up and only one computer could communicate with the printer at a time. I eventually moved my printer to one of the Ethernet LAN ports instead, with exponentially improved performance; all the computers are directly networked to the printer, no more failing software, and no more congestion at the printer.

And finally, like every other wireless router I have ever owned, this one drops connections. So far, it has only had to be reset twice in the first two weeks. If the resets continue to decline, I will be adding a 5th star.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the $150 dollar Netgear I went through......THREE TIMES!!
Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2015

I have gone through 3 Netgear WND4500 routers each one with issues. One just bricked, tried to flash the firmware to reinstall and nothing. Read review after review on how to do that, and just got nothing when I tried to ping the router. Returned it and got a second one and set it up and it worked fine, except that the 5ghs would drop the signal and I would have to power off the router then power it back on. After two months of that, I returned it and tried a third one because I wanted the simultaneous dual band. Well the third one did the same thing as the second one, and after reading some reviews from CNET as well as Amazon and Bestbuy, I realized it was a common issue. Decided I would just try this cheap $50 dollar one and have had NO, ZERO, ZILCH, issues running both the 2.4ghz and the 5ghz band at the same time. I have my Samsung/LG tablets and phones on the 5ghz and the computers on 2.4ghz and it hasn't even hit any speed bumps, this thing is awesome. I even have my WD passport HD plugged into it so I can back up all of my photos from my computers on it....I will say though, it is REALLLLLY slow doing that. I have found it is much faster to just plug it into the computer and back up the photos via the USB 3.0 ports on the computers.

* to the title - I only paid $150 dollars once for the Netgear, the other two times it was on sale for $100

2.0 out of 5 stars Good router... once you can get it set up.. or keep it setup
Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2015

This router does a pretty decent job. I very rarely run into any issues with it once it has been set up.

That being said, set-up was a pain. I'm decent with computers (never built my own, but I know my way around using Google to troubleshoot), and this set up with my Zoom modem for Time Warner Cable. The router does not seem able to connect without cloning my PC's mac address. This process includes plugging my laptop into the modem directly with an Ethernet cable, then plugging in the router and going into the router setup page (192.168.0.1) and cloning the MAC address. Needed tech support each time.

Once set up, it works like a charm.

[EDIT]
I am lowering my review as this is still an issue... Every 3 or four weeks I am on the phone with technical support trying to get this thing connected to the internet. Will be returning if amazon allows.

TP-Link AC750 Wireless Wi-Fi Gigabit Router (Archer C2)
I just got this router today but I have owned several routers over the years and this one has given me no problems.

The first thing I did was download the latest firmware for this model and extract the ".bin" file from the zip file to my desktop. Then I connected my computer to the router with an ethernet cable (without the modem connected) and went to 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of my browser which took me to the router's settings page. Then it's "admin" for the username and the same for the default password and I'm into the settings part. Go to system tools and upgrade firmware, point the router to the downloaded firmware file and click on upgrade. Easy as can be.

After connecting my modem to the WAN port, turning it on and giving it a few minutes to bind to several channels, I ran a speed test and all was well. I'm getting the 250mbps I am supposed to get. Then I configured the two wi-fi channels with separate SSIDs and passwords and that tested a bit slower than the ethernet connection but that is to be expected. I have a very small apartment so wide coverage isn't an issue for me.

File transfers from my desktop to my laptop over ethernet were at speeds expected for gigabit ports. I have not yet tried connecting anything via the USB port but I'll write an update whenever I do.

For the price, this router is working exactly as I had hoped -- but time will tell. If any problems crop up, I will update this review.

Review Revision (10/31/2015 @ 1:22PM EST

***Buyer Beware***

I am now changing this review and rating back to 1 star. This device has failed with no warning or reason multiple times since I purchased it in June. This has got to be the absolute worst networking product and brand I have ever had to use. This device has failed yet again but this time, it won't recover. I have restored it to factory, removed all changes, nothing is working. I will never purchase another TP-Link product ever again because all they do is fail after using them for a matter of months.

If you want something cheap and unreliable, be my guest and buy this sub-par product. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. This brand and product aren't worth the money or potential headaches.

I am going to chalk this up to another loss and buy a more reputable product.

Review Revision (09/27/2015 @ 12:54 PM EST)

I was able to get the device working by downloading all 3 available firmware upgrades from http://www.tp-link.us/download-center.html. I accomplished the upgrade by installing each one by one. After installing each, I had to reset to defaults so the changes would take affect on the router. After doing that, which took about 30 minutes max, the device recognized my Cable modem, pulled an IP successfully, and I then restored a configuration I backed up before resetting the device.

I've upgraded my rating from 1 star to 3 stars simply because this isn't my first TP-LINK branded network device and all that I've ever owned have had the same issue. They all just randomly lose configuration or stop passing network traffic at random with no warning or potential signs of failure.

I am still going to purchase another router in the future to have one with much stronger and reliable wifi signals, USB 3.0 port for sharing music, pictures, and videos across all networked devices, and to have an overall product that is much more reliable and stable.

Original Review (09/26/2015 @ 10:00 PM EST)

If I could rate this item 0 stars I would. This is the first time I didn't purchase an extended warranty on computer or networking equipment and I am regretting this decision. After multiple resets, reconfigurations, etc., this device has failed. And only after having it since July. I will never buy a TP Link product ever again.

The big plus of this device, besides the low cost, was that it had a USB 2.0 port. I was able to connect my 3TB desktop hard drive to it and stream my music and movies from any computer over the network. I was really enjoying that.

Another plus was the strong Dual Band network signal this device was broadcasting, which is why I bought it to replace a failing Linksys Dual Band router. I had no issue getting wifi downstairs like I was with my other router.

Now that this has died, I've got to find the warranty information. I hope TP Link has warranted this item for more than 90 days. If not, I guess it's not so bad. Since it was only about $45, it's not too much money lost, Nevertheless, if you want a device that is cheap and not guaranteed to work, buy TP Link. My next wireless Dual Band router will probably be Linksys or Netgear. I'm putting my money on a proven brand that I know works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for LAN devices. For Wifi, read my experience below.
Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2015

For basic email or web surfing, yes. If you are looking for performance over Wifi, choose something else. I have a 50mbps internet service speed and spent several hours trying to get this device to sustain high speeds; however, it will only hold high speeds for a few minutes and drop up to 50% when I would run speed test moments later. The only way for me to get high speeds consistently was to directly connect to the router or by configuring as a public access point, which shares my internet with everyone.

I understand enough about IT and networks to know that the setup was not as easy as others. In addition, when I needed to change settings, I had to reboot both the router and the internet modem - this was a time consuming task!

For gaming with XBOX One - no. I had issues with NAT and, when I got it to work, I had issues with internet speed. In addition, for unknown reasons, my phone would sometimes say it was connected but the internet will not load. I had to turn my phone internet off and on to get it working again - this was not an issue before this router and definitely not an issue with the router I now have.

Again, for an average user, this device will work. But under above average load I had speed issues. The range was below my expectations.
