Details:Zotac Mini Barebonds PC for $180
(expired)

This deal is for someone looking for a tiny PC or home theater PC. It is a Zotac Zbox-ID80-U Mini PC with Intel Atom D2700 Dual-Core 2.13GHz CPU, Nvidia Geforce GT520M, Wifi b/g/n, 4 USB ports, optical S/PDIF audio output port, gigabit ethernet port, and a memory card reader. Includes a media remote control with USB IR receiver, and a VESA mounting bracket for physically mounting the PC on the back side of an HDTV.

It is a "barebones" PC, meaning it includes no memory, no hard drive or SSD, no keyboard, no mouse, and no operating system.
  • A pair of 2GB DDR3 SO-DIMM Memory goes for around $41.
  • A Sandisk 64GB SSD goes for $39 today, or a 120GB SSD for $65.
  • You are on your own to get and install an operating system. Windows 8 goes for $95, and many versions of Linux are freely available online.
  • No keyboard & mouse are included. Spares are easy to scrounge, or get a wireless keyboard/trackpad combo like a Logitech K400 for around $25.
  • Optionally add a Bluetooth Adapter for $13, to give the PC the ability to communicate wirelessly with Bluetooth devices.
Use a free operating system, and your total cost for a fully functional home theater PC would be around $300.

If you are looking for a simple & slim PC for a public space (like a check-in computer at a receptionist's desk or a convenient PC in a hallway), this is a great deal. Attach the PC to the back of a monitor, plug in a keyboard, and you have a convenient PC that is completely hidden behind a monitor.

As a Home Theater PC though, this deal is less attractive than it would have been a couple years ago. A home theater PC gives you the ability to watch online videos, play movies stored on local storage, surf the web, and play games all from your sofa. However it is a lot of work to set one up, and for the same (or cheaper) price, you can get similar things.
  • If you want to stream online videos, movies, and music, just get a Roku 3 for $85. It is our favorite device for streaming media. Also many HDTVs and Blu-Ray players already can do streaming media.
  • If playing movie files from local storage is important, get a WD TV Live for $80. Rated one of the best devices for playing movie files from USB drives and networked hard drives.
  • If you use iTunes and Apple products a lot, try an Apple TV for $93, which can stream video, games, music, videos, and photos with easy integration with iOS devices using AirPlay.
If we were designing a home theater system, we would choose the devices above. They don't do games like a home theater PC would, but console systems, desktop PCs, and tablets are great for that.
