Details:Changhong 50" LED-backlit LCD 1080p HDTV for $380
(expired)

(repost)

As we expected, the Changhong 50-inch LED-backlit LCD 1080p HDTV is back on sale for under $400 ($380, this time). This is a great value for a 50-inch television. We like ours, and most customers are happy with their purchase as well. It costs about half of the price of 50-inch TVs you will find at Costco, Best Buy, and Amazon. Some detailed specs are on the manufacturer's website. Newegg has an unboxing video.

This particular deal comes with 6 free HDMI cables. However, beware these are very cheaply-made cables, and are susceptible to interference. HDMI is a digital signal, so it either works or does not work (there is no static when signals are weak), so you will know right away if the cables work for you. We got 5 of these cables with a previous Changhong TV deal, and only 1 cable worked for us. The cables themselves were fine, but their lack of sufficient shielding meant the free cables could not carry a 1080p digital signal when near any electrical interference sources, like electronics and other wires. Still nice Newegg gives free HDMI cables with this deal, and they may work for you, but just don't be angry if your "free cables" wind up in the trash.

The picture quality of the TV is excellent for a bedroom TV. As a living room TV, the picture quality is very good but certainly not as good as a Samsung 7000-series, 8000-series, or other big-name brand TV would be. The Samsung 7000/8000 models go for $1000 to $2200 apiece, a huge jump in price over this Changhong.

In terms of value, the $1000+ and $2000+ TVs will probably not hold their value as well as this Changhong would. If you bought a new $1200 TV today and tried to sell it in 2 years, you may get $600 or $800 for it (loss of at least $400). Selling your $380 Changhong 50-inch TV may have a value of roughly $250 in 2 years (loss of $130 or so). As portable devices become more popular alternatives to "TV" watching, and as better screen technology will be coming out in the next couple years, it is unclear how popular today's LED big-screen television technology will be in a few years. One thing that is clear, they will drop in value the moment they arrive in your home. Therefore, unless you really, really need to have nothing less than the superior image quality of a $1000+ TV, we would recommend a relatively inexpensive TV like this Changhong 50-inch.

If you want to mount it on a wall, we recommend this flat/tilt mount or this articulating arm bracket. The Changhong TV's HDMI ports are on the side of the TV, so your HDMI cables may stick out the side. If you want to hide your HDMI cables behind the TV, we used a HDMI Right Angle Port Saver which angles the HDMI cable upward instead of out the side of the TV. There are other HDMI adapters too, that can angle your HDMI wires to fit your cable-hiding desires. If you need help mounting a TV and hiding the HDMI & electrical wires inside your walls, consult a local electrician or handyman (Craigslist is full of them).
