Details:Tips on Searching for Flights:
If there is someplace you want to visit, and are searching for the best deals on flights, it really helps to know where to look.

Finding airline tickets within North America:
Almost all regular airfares within North America are based on one-way fares. Yes, buying a "roundtrip" ticket is convenient, but buying two one-way tickets can be cheaper because it allows you to fly in and out of separate airports and using different airlines.
  1. Open up 2 browser tabs, and navigate both to www.google.com/flights. Choose one-way on both tabs, or click here and it will open as one-way.
  2. On the first window, enter your originating city and the city you want to visit. On the second window, reverse the cities to find a one-way fare to get you home.
  3. Click on the date box, and a 2-month calendar will appear showing prices available for each days. For an example, click here. Click the date box on your second tab window, then you can see a complete breakdown of all available prices on each day.
  4. From there, you can plan your trips.
Tweak parameters, such as removing certain airlines you do not want, or limiting the search to specific airlines and times you do want.

This will almost always get you the best airfare within the US.

If Southwest Airlines services your city, also check their website. Since Southwest airfare can only be found on their own website, you would need to remember to check them too. Use the same method of searching for one-way airfares, since sometimes that makes the best prices easier to spot.

Since all airfare within the US is based on one-way airfare, you could also get two trips for the price of one. For example, a Chicago traveler may find a return flight from Boston expensive, but a return flight from New York to be cheap. Figure out the train and airfare prices between Boston and New York, and you may be able to visit both cities for the same price as one.

Beware that some super low budget airlines, like Allegiant and Frontier, charge hefty fees for checked luggage AND carry-on luggage. Some fees could cost you as much as $100 extra per person! Additionally, low-budget carriers have a lot of complaints about on-time service, cancellations, and lost luggage. When comparing prices, be sure to factor in the cost and possible stress of which airline you choose.

To see a complete breakdown of checked and carry-on baggage fees, use Kayak's Airline Fee List.

For a list of the best (and worst) airlines in the US, see a recent airline ranking list on the Wall Street Journal and on CNN.

Finding international airline tickets:
Almost all flights overseas are based on round-trip tickets. If you compare the prices of one-way international flights versus round-trip international flights, they are often the same price. For example, round-trip from Miami to Europe costs about the same as one-way from Miami to Europe, so you would end up paying double when buying two one-way tickets.

Most people who travel internationally do want to visit several cities. It is best to choose one centralized city for your USA-to-international flight, then buy cheap flights or train tickets to get you around.
  • When traveling to Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, buy a round-trip ticket from the US to either London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Milan, Zurich, or any large city. Then when you are there, buy train tickets, plane tickets, or rent a car to get you to other cities.
